Our purpose is to present thecore knowledge of our specialties in an integratedand patient-focused way. The disciplines of oralsurgery, dental and maxillofacial radiology, oraland maxillofacial pathology and oral medicinehave been brought together to provide an understandingof clinical problems. We have thereforeworked together to compile chapters, althoughwe have each taken a lead in coordinating particularchapters (Paul Coulthard, Chapters 1,3, 4, 6, 8, 9; Keith Horner, Chapters 2, 5, 7, 15,16; Philip Sloan, Chapters 10, 11, 12, 13; andElizabethTheaker, Chapter 14). This new editionhas been thoroughly updated since the publicationof the earlier popular text. I would like to thankEdmund Bailey, Neil Patel, Verena Toedtling andOliver Tabbenor for reviewing many of the chapters.Other areas of dentistry are dealt with in theaccompanying volume of this series – Master DentistryVolume Two: Restorative Dentistry, PaediatricDentistry and Orthodontics, edited by Peter Heasman.We hope that the format is fresh and stimulatingwith ample opportunity for readers to assesstheir knowledge.While this book will act as a core text for undergraduatedental students, it will also be useful forpostgraduates undertaking a Masters degree in OralSurgery or preparing for the Membership of theJoint Dental Faculties (MJDF) or Membership inOral Surgery examination of the Royal College ofSurgeons in the UK or international equivalents.Paul Coulthard2013.
